The mid-season episodes of The Last of Us have successfully maintained the momentum from the white-hot start to the season. Ellie and Dina continued their quest to find Abby and make her pay for her murder of Joel. Despite numerous warnings and reasons to return home, the young power couple refuses to turn back and choose the path of peace and forgiveness.
Believe me, I understand the desire to seek revenge on someone who hurt a member of your family. That being said, I am not sure I would ever take things to the extreme lengths that Ellie is willing to go. She is willing to not only put her own life at risk, but the life of her pregnant girlfriend as well. Even if they do find Abby and kill her Joel will still be dead and nothing will have been accomplished.
Let’s also not forget that the entire reason that Abby killed Joel is that Joel not only killer her own father, but he also killed all the scientists who had any chance of finding a cure for cordyceps. In terms of possible reasons for committing murder, Abbys reasons are about as understandable as they come.
A highlight of the past few episodes was the introduction of Jeffrey Wrights character Isaac. The opening scene where he casually betrays his own soldiers in favor of the oppressed locals told us so much about the character’s moral compass. He will have zero problems hurting people if he feels that they deserve to be hurt. I also thoroughly enjoyed when he brutally tortured the scar for information. My favorite part was the moment he realized he was not going to get any information from the scar. Isaac realized there was no point in continuing and shot the scar with no hesitation. He gets zero enjoyment out of hurting people but will do so out of perceived necessity.
The foreshadowing of the horrors that await our characters in the basement have been really fun. Anyone who has played the game knows what is waiting for them down there. It will be one of the most memorable moments of the show when that moment occurs. That level of the video game still haunts my dreams.
The stalkers continue to be one of the creepiest things I have ever seen on television. For a moment I thought poor Ellie might be a goner. Then our boy Jessie showed up to save the day! I cannot wait for Dina to tell him that she is pregnant and intends to raise his child with Ellie. Start angling for that thruple my dude!
A bientot!
